ABC to interview Sandusky victim
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — ABC will interview the young man whose 2009 allegations of sexual abuse led to the Penn State scandal and the criminal conviction of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
Attorney Michael Boni, who represents the teenager known in court papers as Victim 1, said Wednesday that ABC landed the first interview with his client, who has a book coming out this fall.
It’s unclear when the ABC interview would air. ABC didn’t immediately return a phone message left Wednesday seeking comment. The New York Post was first to report the ABC exclusive.
Sandusky was convicted in June of dozens of criminal counts of sexual abuse of 10 boys on and off campus. At age 68, he awaits sentencing, which likely will send him to prison for the rest of his life.
Ovechkin joins Russian team
MOSCOW — Alexander Ovechkin is returning to his former Russian team, Dynamo Moscow, during the NHL lockout.
The KHL team said in a statement Wednesday that it has signed the Washington Capitals star to a contract that lasts until the lockout ends. It said Ovechkin has undergone medical exams and has already participated in training. It did not disclose the financial terms of his contract.
Ovechkin joined the Capitals in 2005 and was the NHL’s MVP in 2008 and 2009.
He is the latest Russian star to return home during the lockout. Evgeny Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins has signed a deal with his former team, Metallurg Magnitogorsk. He was joined by Ottawa Senators defenseman Sergei Gonchar, and Nikolai Kulemin of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Chavez Jr. tests positive for pot
LAS VEGAS — A Top Rank Inc. spokesman says middleweight boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. tested positive for marijuana after his first professional loss last weekend in Las Vegas.
Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels read a statement Wednesday saying the promoter was reviewing the report of a positive marijuana test.
He says the 26-year-old Chavez will explain the results before the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Commission executive Keith Kizer declined to provide a name, but says one of 32 fighters who took part in bouts at two Las Vegas venues last Saturday tested positive for marijuana.
Kizer says the commission is awaiting results of pre-fight tests for banned substances before releasing all the results.
Chavez fell to 46-1-1 with 32 knockouts with his WBC title loss to Sergio Martinez.

SEATTLE — The Baltimore Orioles are throwing 19-year-old pitching prospect Dylan Bundy into the middle of a pennant race.
Baltimore recalled Bundy from Double-A Bowie on Wednesday. The right-hander will provide depth in the bullpen for the Orioles, who played an 18-inning game against the Mariners on Tuesday night and have an upcoming doubleheader against Toronto on Monday.
Bundy was selected fourth overall in the 2011 draft. He was a combined 9-3 with a 2.08 ERA with three minor league affiliates this season, including 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA in three starts at Bowie.
NHL cancels preseason games
NEW YORK — The NHL canceled its entire September preseason game schedule, the first on-ice casualty of the four-day lockout of the players’ association.
The league is wiping out all games through Sept. 30, a move it deems “necessary because of the absence of a collective bargaining agreement.”
The regular season is scheduled to begin on Oct. 11.
Also, a person familiar with the plan says NHL employees at the league offices will switch to a four-day work week Oct. 1 because of the lockout.
More BCS tweaks discussed
ROSEMONT, Ill. — The BCS executive director says conference commissioners have discussed the possibility of adding another game to be part of the semifinal rotation for the new college football playoff.
Bill Hancock says nothing was decided during meetings the last two days near Chicago.
The postseason plan approved by university presidents in June called for the national semifinals to rotate among six bowl sites. The years those sites do not host semifinals, they would be marquee bowl games, involving other highly ranked teams.
Hancock says commissioners talked about whether there would be enough access to those marquee games for conferences that do not have contractual ties to high-profile bowls, such as the Pac-12 and Big Ten’s partnership with the Rose Bowl.
Swim coach Curl gets lifetime ban
USA Swimming banned coach Rick Curl for life for an improper relationship with a teenage swimmer in the 1980s.
Curl, who ran one of the nation’s largest swim clubs near Washington, D.C., and coached 1996 and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Tom Dolan, was scheduled for a hearing Wednesday before the National Board of Review. But he informed the governing body he was waiving his right to challenge the case.
Curl voluntarily gave up his membership and will be added to USA Swimming’s list of banned individuals, which is published on the organization Web site.
The coach was accused of starting a relationship with a 13-year-old female swimmer in the 1980s. Kelley Davis Currin said she received a $150,000 settlement from Curl not to go to law enforcement with details of the illicit four-year relationship, but decided to come forward after the sport was rocked by a sexual abuse scandal two years ago.
Mayweather ordered to pay $114K
LAS VEGAS — A federal court judge in Nevada ordered boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. to pay about $114,000 in lawyer fees and costs for avoiding questioning from rival fighter Manny Pacquiao’s lawyers.
Attorneys for neither man immediately responded Wednesday to messages about Monday’s order.
The judge ruled that Mayweather violated a court order to be questioned under oath by Pacquiao’s attorneys in a civil defamation lawsuit.
Pacquiao accuses Mayweather of defamation for statements alleging that the Filipino fighter used performance-enhancing substances.
Pacquiao denies that claim.
The award of more than $113,000 in legal fees and $774 in costs came after Pacquiao’s lawyers lost a bid to have the case thrown out completely.
Reds’ Baker gets chest x-rays
CHICAGO — A spokesman for the Cincinnati Reds says manager Dusty Baker left Wrigley Field in street clothes more than two hours before Wednesday night’s game to get chest X-rays to “rule out pneumonia.”
Bench coach Chris Speier brought the lineup card to home plate and TV cameras showed Speier in the dugout during the game against the Chicago Cubs, but there was no sign of Baker.
Cincinnati leads the NL Central by 11 games over the St. Louis Cardinals and can clinch the division as early as Thursday with a pair of wins and Cardinals losses.
